Introduction

English Interpretation and Translation Major

Our English Interpretation and Translation major provides students with intensive English training in listening, speaking, reading and writing designed to build their comprehensive English skills. It also provides opportunities to practice interpreting and translating English into Korean and vice versa. By doing so, our major will create a good foundation for nurturing global talent in interpreting and translating.

  • The major of Chinese Korean Interpretation and Translation was opened in the School of Chinese Language and Culture in 2007.
  • Combined Major of Chinese Korean Interpretation and Translation and Major of Chinese Language and Literature into Department Of Chinese Language and Culture in 2015.
  • The Chinese Korean Interpretation and Translation Track was run from 2015 in the Department Of Chinese Language and Culture.
  • Reopened in the name of Department Of Applied Chinese-Korean Interpretation And Translation in 2023.

    BASIC KR-CN INTERPRETATION AND TRANSLATION PRACTICE
    Learn basic Chinese through interpretation and translation training. Study Chinese phonetic symbols, basic conversation, basic grammar, and basic phrases. Various interpretation and translation techniques such as shadowing, sight translation, and post-editing are used. The purpose of this class is not to become an interpreter or translator. It aims to improve Chinese language skills through methods used in interpretation and translation training.

    ELEMENTARY CHINESE I
    The objective of this course is to help students carry on basic conversational Chinese by studying basic pronunciation and vocabulary.

    ENGLISH READING
    This course is aimed at improving students' ability to read and understand various English articles written by native speakers of English. In order to accomplish this goal, students will (1) read English passages from various cultural backgrounds and genres, (2) learn English vocabularies and expressions, and (3) improve their comprehension ability in terms of cultures and contexts. This will help students deepen their understanding of human cultures and lives as well as their knowledge of English.

    SEMINAR FOR ACADEMIC LIFE
    1. Summary of the course This course is to assist university freshmen in CRM designing to adapt university life well through the instruction and counselling of supervising professor. (This course is composed of self analysis, personality type test, career research, instruction for the success of university life, career plan and direction setting, CRM designing method and CRM designing. The course should be teaching in classes of the students by supervising professor.) 2. Course objectives This course is to motivate the students before the mid term exam and provide students with self analysis, personality type test (MBTI or TCI) and career research (YAT test). Also, this course shall has a plan to instruct the students to enhance the efficiency of university life through career and time management. In addition, this course is to make a chance for the students to have practical assistance to university life by providing study method, report designing strategy and the information on academic system and various kinds of internal programs of the university. After the mid term exam, the students will be instructed to set the direction of career designing through continuous counselling of supervising professor and the students will be able to establish CRM designing and execution plan.

    This course is to cultivate community sense as members of society and the global village for students in order to develop the basic knowledge required as global citizens. Especially, this course is to foster the spirit of cooperation, sharing, service, and creativity and study the social contribution and leadership to solving the challenges the global community faces. As a liberal arts course, it is centered to nurture a leader having the global capability to contribute to community development through learning the knowledge and the case on the value & logic of social responsibility focused on environmental preservation, social contribution, and good governance(ESG). This course aims to foster a generous mind, learn knowledge and technology and build the capacity to contribute to building a society towards a safer and happier world through the study of theory and practice.

    SPECIALIZED ACADEMIC ENGLISH
    The aim of the course is to help students increase their fluency and accuracy in English. The course will be co-taught by Korean and Native English instructors. Korean instructors will provide students with an opportunity to practice English structure, vocabulary, and expressions, and students will be encouraged to enhance their verbal skills by actively participating in classroom activities. Students will further practice expressing themselves in English with native English instructors.

    COMMUNICATION SKILL
    The ability to communicate effectively in speaking and writing is one of the most important skills for educational and career success. This course gives students opportunities to discuss, practice, and eventually master the skills involved in oral and written communication. The topics include theory and practice of effective communication, making speeches, presentation skills, principles of persuasion, and writing skills.

    CONVERGENCE- AND INTEGRATION-BASED THINKING AND WRITING
    The ability of analyzing and solving problems is emphasized as one of the conditions for survival in the 21st century and one of the core elements of creative capabilities. This course was designed to cultivate convergence- and integration-based creative capabilities, which are integrated problem-solving capabilities to collect, analyze and process knowledge and information by reinforcing the ability of analyzing and solving problems, recreate it in a synthetic fashion, and express it effectively through speech and writing. The course will help the students cultivate their synesthesia thinking and communication skills based on sympathy with other human beings, understanding of the community, and positivity or Gongseong that is sought after by Yeungnam University. Its ultimate goals are to promote the students' creative knowledge development and reinforce their writing capabilities consistently through "convergence- and integration-based thinking and writing as a problem-solving approach."

    SOFTWARE AND AI
    Software and AI (Artificial Intelligence) course aims to educate the basic concepts of software and computational thinking to use them in various applications. It allows students of various majors to experience the core technologies of the 4th industrial revolution, such as big data, machine learning, and AI. It also introduces various applications of AI so that students can easily apply these technologies to their field of study. This course classifies the lecture types into three categories, and adjust the lecture difficulty according to the student's academic ability.

    This subject exposes students to the expressions and items of current english used in english journals such as Time or Newsweek. A deeper and wider view on international affairs dealt in those magazines can be formed via reading a variety of articles, which is hard get elsewhere.

    This course provides students with listening practice using a variety of media to train students to improve listening skills. It uses listening materials taken from American and British news and talk shows. In the process of listening, students are required to learn new words related to the given topics and practice how to pronounce them.

    This course focuses on listening practice using American or British soap operas. It pays particular attention to understanding some useful expressions used in the soap operas and practicing expressing them in real-life situations.

    This course provides the fundamental concepts and skills in the field of interpretation and translation.     ENGLISH PRONUNCIATION AND PRACTICE
    This course was designed to introduce students to the various facets of phonetic and phonological investigation of English. This course will cover the basics of English phonetics such as stress, place and manner of articulation as they are relevant to the realization of phonological regularity of English. The first part of the course will focus on theoretical backgrounds of articulatory phonetics and phonology and the latter part will work on the ability to pronounce English, correctly and smoothly.

    This course provides fundamental concepts and useful techniques involved in English into Korean interpreting. In particular, it helps students improve the ability to listen to and analyze a speaker’s English utterances so that they can convey his or her intended message clearly in Korean language. Effective techniques used in this course include active listening, derivation of intended meanings, note-taking technique, memory enhancement, among many others.

    PHONETIC ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH SPEECH
    Phonetic Analysis of English Speech is a course designed to introduce the methods for the acoustic analysis of English speech. Using speech analysis tools such as Praat that provides visual displays of both segmental and prosodic features of English, you will learn how to collect and analyze acoustic speech data and how to account for properties of the English segments and phonological variations.

    BASIC COMPREHENSIVE APPLIED CHINESE
    It targets students who have mastered the basics of Chinese. It is a subject for Chinese proficiency in the application step. It comprehensively deals with basic grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, and reading comprehension of Chinese.

    CORE VOCABULARY OF KOREAN AND CHINESE (1)
    50-70% of Korean words are written in Chinese characters, and there are many Chinese words similar to Korean words written in Chinese characters. To learn Chinese and Korean effectively, students need to learn easy-to-understand vocabulary first. In this course, we focus on showing the use of the core vocabulary through examples focusing on the Korean and Chinese words that are similar to each other.

    This course was developed in line with initiative and expertise among the five core competencies for nurturing Y-type polymath talent at Yeungnam University. It is aimed at students in the first semester of the sec nd year, and is designed based on the 3rd and 4th levels presented in < 國際中文敎學中文程 度等級標準(2021) >. It is designed to enable tasks to be performed in everyday life and business environments by setting them. Breaking away from simple reading and comprehension classes, it was designed to enable listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In addition, it is designed to enable basic interpretation practice such as shadowing, Sight Translation, summary speaking, and note taking.

    CHINESE KOREAN TOURISM AND CULTURAL TRANSLATION
    Tourism and culture are the areas with the highest demand for interpretation and translation. Translation and interpretation are essential in tourist destinations, hotels, and airports, where people move and cultural exchanges occur. This field is also the most preferred job for foreign language majors. In this course, students will learn the Korean-Chinese translation necessary for handling tourism information, hotel user response, and various tasks at the airport. This could be useful in the job field.

    UTILIZATION AND UNDERSTANDING OF BIG DATA IN CHINA
    This course uses big data related to China to increase understanding of Chinese economy and society. Through R, a programming language, students develop their own ability to construct, analyze, and interpret Chinese big data. The main course contents are as follows. First, we visualize big data statistics provided by Baidu through R and find economic meaning. Second, we analyze Chinese text data using text mining techniques, and create an analysis report with visualized data. Third, we train business presentation using the prepared reports.

    China ranks first in terms of sales in the global game market and Korean games are also very popular in China. Korean translation of Chinese games and Chinese translation of Korean games are in high demand. However, education on game translation is hardly conducted in domestic universities. In this course, students learn the theory and practice of game translation.

    TRANSLATION OF INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE AND POLICE AFFAIRS
    The Korea-China exchanges conducted by the government, local governments and private organizations are continuing. Accurate interpretation and translation are required at the international exchange site where important content comes and goes, and smooth progress is also required. Chinese people account for the largest portion of foreigners living in Korea. Therefore, police who are good at interpreting and translating in police departments are essential. Also, the maritime police department needs a police officer who is good at interpreting and translating. In this course, students learn about international exchange and the work of foreign police and maritime police.
