Introduction

Major of Composition

Our goal is to produce great composers with sence and sensibility, who can be leaders of the new musical style of our time. 
The modern musical content demands highly skilled professional musicians not only in the field of performing arts, but in broadcasting, film, computer and multimedia music. In order to acquire this ability we offer systematically organized curriculum in music theory and composition. Students are encouraged to have one or more compositions performed each semester and to participate in competitions or international exchange concerts to enhance view. 
In masters program, students can individualize and concentrate on personal interests such as conducting, musicology or related fields besides composition.

Major of Voice

The Major of Voice Music invites widely recognized performers to produce talented performers through in-depth curriculum. Students are encouraged to participate in Freshmen concert, Night of Art Songs, Annual Opera performance, and Graduation Concerts in which the students are selected through competitive auditions for professional level of performance. 
Through club activities such as Opera Academy(OA)and Concert Choir(CC), students experience planning and designing of their own concert which help them to make decisions on career planning upon graduation. 
For higher employment rate, Major offers teacher-training program for after-school music teachers and special program for groups of students preparing for operas, choir performances, and competitions. Also, counseling sessions are held regularly for students willing to proceed on to graduate school or to study aborad for future advancement.

Major of Piano

In order to produce professional performers excellent faculty members of Korea and abroad give intense individual training. Based on knowledge gained through systematically organized curriculum and participation in various concerts, students improve performing skill. In addition, internationally renowned performers and professors are invited for master classes several times each year to help students to develop their performing ability. 
Upon graduation, students may advance to graduate school or study abroad for advanced degrees or participate in festivals to teach at university level.Various job opportunities are available as instructor at institutions, private instructor, accompanist for ensemble or choir, or reporter for music magazine.Some may admit themselves in school of education to become a music teacher in secondary school.

Major of Orchestral Instruments

Our highly-reputable faculty members provide individual instructions in each instrument, promoting on students' musical and technical abilities with systematically organized curricula of orchestral and ensemble playing as well as music history, literature, and music theory. 
Through various performance experiences such as orchestra concerts, chamber music recitals, Concerto Night, our students are trained to become excellent performers. Our goal is to educate well-rounded musicians to work in various fields of music, and to serve for cultural development of the community in the ever-changing tendencies of the present time. 
After graduation, our graduates can be a member of an orchestra or an ensemble, or a music instructor on a private or group basis. Furthermore, some of them go to abroad for advanced degrees to teach as a member of university faculty, or enter a graduate school of education to become a music teacher at secondary schools.

Major of Korean Music

The Major of Korean Music has been nurturing proficient traditional Korean music experts through wide-ranging and comprehensive courses on theories and practice since its establishment in 1982. The Major has launched graduate programs in 1986 and beginning in 2009, we have been offering doctoral programs in Korean Traditional Music and Music Anthropology in order to provide in depth study. 
Programs in the Major include comprehensive courses on theories of Korean Traditional Music and its history, analysis, and specific individual training on various instruments. Students can take courses on sight singing, ear training, and the history of western music. 
Upon completion of these required courses, students are expected to participate in weekly recitals, annual performances and graduation recitals in order to graduate.

History

The Department of Music at Yeungnam University began in 1969 under College of Liberal Arts with two majors, vocal and instrumental performance. In 1972, Department of Music was formated under College of Education and Composition of Music Department was added. Finally, in 1981, College of Music has independently launched. In the following year 1982, it was expanded with the addition of Department of Korean Traditional music. In 1987, the Instrumental Department was separated into Piano and Orchestral Instruments. Since then, with high quality music faculties and curriculum, we have become an outstanding center of music education admitting 180 talented students annually. The College of Music is located in magnificent Gyeong-San campus with a museum and folklore park, surrounded by various educational and cultural environment. The facilities at the College of Music, Concert Hall, Symphony Hall, Opera Rehearsal Room, Music library with audio listening room and practice rooms, accommodate to support potentially creative artists with purpose for the development of personal maturity. We also provide individual students with highly reputable professors and supportive alumni, scholarships, and exchange programs.

The College of Music also invites distinguished professors around the world as visiting professors in residence, to provide ultimate musical education.

    This course is designed for students who complete studying modal counterpoint. The 18th century counterpoint is emphasized in this coures. The writing form the first species to the fifth species, imitative writing, and invention are requred for students. Also the analysis of imitative compositions of Baroque period is emphasized to understand its style and compositional technique.

    ACCOMPANYING OF KOREAN MUSIC
    This course will focus on the process of development and accompaniment techniques of general rhythm (court music, Korean folk music, san-jo, and new musical composition) of Korean traditional music. This course shows the elegance of court music rhythm, the beauty of Korean folk music rhythm, ever-changing speed of san-jo rhythm, various rhythms of new musical composition, and various new accompaniment techniques. This course will enable students to understand how to use rhythms and how to apply it to Korean traditional music. Students must resister for two continuous terms.

Important issues in current ethonomusicology such as Eurocentrism in music will be discussed. The course will consist of lectures, discussions, and video presentations.     The course will introduce keyboard music from before 1750 with a focus on Baroque performance practice and repertory search (requirement: actual performance and academic study). Topics will cover: (1) early keyboard music in England from Byrd to Handel; early keyboard music in France from Chambonnieres to Rameau; early keyboard music in Germany and the Netherlands up to Fisher Kuhnau; early keyboard music in Italy, Spain, and Portugal; music of Domenico Scarlatti; and (2) music of J. S. Bach; characteristics of his music and general problems of interpretation; well-tempered klavier; English suites and French suites; Klavierubung; partitas; improvisation; studies in ornamentation; Goldberg variations; Musical Offering; and the Art of Fugue.

    This course aims to provide a deep understanding in Instrumental Ensemble Repertoire and its performance technique through two primary methods. First, a series of lectures and discussions will build a foundation of knowledge for students regarding instrumental ensemble repertoire centered around the piano. Then, students will be given opportunities to perform in groups where they will be guided to experiment with performance specific technical ideas such as tempo, meter, rhythm, phrasing, articulation, breathing, balance, voicing and pedaling in a collaborative context.

    TEACHING AND LEARNING METHOD
    This undergraduate course on piano pedagogy will enable students to prepare as refined piano teachers and players. As pedagogy is defined in terms of functions, work, and the art of teaching, the course will cover a broad spectrum of ideas, factual skills, and experimentation of serious piano teaching on a variety of levels.     This course for piano majors will deal with small ensembles such as piano duo Each team will receive weekly two-hour coaching and be expected to rehearse on their own. The course will provide an opportunity to study various elements of ensemble playing techniques and to explore different aspects of musical interpretation, thus helping students to become more expressive and articulate chamber music performers.

    These courses are designed to broaden musical experience and enhance comprehensive musicianship.
